Contrary to what their name suggests, Labradors originally come from Newfoundland, where they were first known as “Saint John's dogs” around 1700.

AudioQuest Black Lab Subwoofer Cable

SOLID CONDUCTORS MADE OF LONG CRYSTALLINE COPPER (LGC): Solid conductors prevent distortion caused by mutual interference between the strands. The solid long crystalline copper (LGC) in the Black Lab enables a more balanced, clearer sound than cables with the usual oxygen-free, highly conductive copper (OFHC - Oxygen-Free-High-Conductivity). OFHC is a general metals industry specification that considers “losses” without any consideration of distortion. LGC contains fewer oxides in the conductive material, fewer impurities, fewer grain boundaries and offers significantly better performance.

POLYETHYLENE FOAM INSULATION: Any solid material adjacent to a conductor becomes part of an incomplete electrical network. Wire insulation and circuit board material absorb energy (losses). Some of this energy is stored and then released as distortion. The Black Lab uses air-filled polyethylene foam insulation for both conductors because air absorbs almost no energy and polyethylene is low-loss and has a benign distortion profile. Thanks to the air in the polyethylene foam, it causes significantly less blurring effects than other materials.

METAL LAYER NOISE DISSIPATION SYSTEM (NDS): Achieving 100 percent shielding is easy. To prevent “trapped” RF interference from affecting the device’s ground reference, the AudioQuest Noise Dissipation System is required. It prevents most RF interference from reaching the ground plane of the device.

SYMMETRICAL COAX GEOMETRY: Identical + and – conductors prevent the shield from being used as an inferior audio conductor.

COLD-WELDED, GOLD-PLATED RCA CONNECTORS: This connector design allows connections without solder - as this is a common source of interference. Because the ferrules are stamped rather than machined, the metal can be selected for low distortion rather than machinability.

GROUNDING: Sometimes there is a hum problem unless the subwoofer and AV receiver (or surround-sound processor) are attached to each other using a separate wire. If your system has a hum problem, try attaching the little spade-lug tails to the metal chassis of the subwoofer amplifier and to the chassis of the sending component. Usually, this extra wire will not be needed.
